The original software was developed by Charles River Software, founded in 1997, renamed Revit Technology Corporation in 2000, and acquired by Autodesk in 2002. Here is the procedure I found works best for me when trying to create a Revit Family (.rfa) file from a SolidWorks (.step) files.Autodesk Revit is a building information modelling software tool for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers, designers and contractors. Revit Families can be used to streamline your design with formulas and calculations. Not only is a well-developed Revit Family used for a practical visual aspect. Therefore, a well-developed Revit Family of the equipment is essential. Keeping in mind the purpose of BIM is to provide a visual representation of an accurate and constructible building.

This process helps the Manufacturer and the Engineer.

Many manufacturers are now providing Engineers and Designers with Revit files in hopes for the Engineers to specify their products. With today’s BIM push Revit Families are needed daily and is growing! From experience when I need a particular BIM Revit Family such as a custom skid heat exchanger, and I am strictly required to work in Autodesk Revit, it can be time-consuming to create a Revit family model of your equipment.
